I must have left my house at eight,          

난 8시에 집을 나섰을 거예요

because I always do

My train, I'm certain, left the station just when it was due

I must have read the morning paper  going into town            

난 시내로 들어가면서 조간 신문을 읽었을 거예요

And having gotten through the editorial,  no doubt I must have frowned

I must have made my desk  around a quarter after nine                      

9시 15분쯤  난 내 책상을 정리했을 거예요

With letters to be read, and heaps of papers waiting to be signed                    

읽어보아야 하는 편지들, 결재를 기다리고 있는 서류뭉치들.

I must have gone to lunch  at half past twelve or so                   

그리고 12시 반쯤  점심을 먹으러 갔을 거예요

The usual place, the usual bunch And still on top of this                                   

늘 같은 장소, 늘 같은 사람들 그리고 점심이 끝날 때 

I'm pretty sure it must have rained

분명히 비가 내렸을 거예요

I must have lit my seventh cigarette at half past two                                       

2시 반에 난 일곱 번째 담배에 불을 붙였을 거예요

And at the time I never even noticed I was blue          

그리고 그 때 난 자신이 우울해 한다는 걸  깨닫지 못했을 거예요

I must have kept on dragging,  through the business of the day              

난 하루 업무에 내내 질질 끌려갔을 거예요

Without really knowing anything,  I hid a part of me away             

정말로 중요한 것을 알지 못하고  나 자신의 일부를 숨겼죠

At five I must have left,        

5시에 난 사무실을 나섰을 거예요

I've done it ever since I finished school    

학교를 졸업한 이후 언제나 그래왔어요

The train back home again  Undoubtedly  I must have read the evening paper then                

다시 열차를 타고 집으로 돌아가며 분명히 난 석간 신문을 읽었을 거예요

Oh yes, I'm sure my life was well within it's usual frame           

오 예, 분명히 나의 삶은 언제나 같은 틀 안에 있었죠

I must have opened my front door at eight o'clock or so            

8 시쯤 난 나의 집 현관문을 열었을 거예요

And stopped along the way to buy some Chinese food to go                   

그리고 길을 가다가 멈추어 어떤 중국 음식을 샀을 거예요

I'm sure I had my dinner watching something on TV                        

분명히 TV를 보면서 저녁을 먹었을 거예요                     

There's not, I think, a single episode of Dallas that I didn't see  

내가 보지 않은 달라스에서의 사건은하나도 없을 거예요

I must have gone to bed around a quarter after ten                     

10시 15분쯤 난 잠자리에 들었을 거예요

I need a lot of sleep, and so I like to be in bed by then                         

난 잠이 많이 필요해요 그래서 그 시간에 침대에 들길 좋아하죠




I must have read a while The latest one by Marilyn French                      

난 책을 약간 읽었어요 최근엔 마릴린 프랜치가 쓴 것 같은 

or something in that style It's funny,                    

그런 종류의 것을 읽었죠 우스운 일이지만

but I had no sense of living without aim      

난 목적 없이 사는 것을 의식도 하지 않았어요

And turning out the light I must have yawned 

그리고 난 불을 끄고 하품을 하며

and cuddled up for yet another night                                                        

또 다른 밤을 웅크리고 잤을 거예요

And rattling on the roof I must have heard the sound of rain
